Should the United States replace fossil fuels with renewable energies?
The purpose of a debate is to explore the pro's and con's to each side of a question. It is not to prove one side right or wrong, or definitively answer the questions being posed. This is part of how we help students understand that we can reasonably and respectfully disagree with people. Students will research and prepare to present their group's side of the argument. The debate will follow a simple format: 3min Opening Statements, 8min Proving and Evidence, 3min Rebuttal, 3min Counter-Rebuttal, 3min Closing Statements. We will poll the class at the beginning and end of each debate to see if opinions change.
As part of the research and presentation process students will prepare a five paragraph essay to turn in on the day of the debate. These papers are the individual grade aspect of the group project and allow students the opportunity to offer additional evidence and insights which their group may not have presented. I will grade the paper using the following rubric.
